When are Construction/Debris Chutes Required in BC?

Workplace Safety | September 14, 2023

Construction sites are ever-evolving places where tasks vary daily, and the tools required can change frequently. At United Scaffold, we know that, while scaffolding, protective gear, and confined space equipment are common on most job sites, there is one element that is not always immediately considered: the construction/debris chute. This chute is vital in ensuring the safe disposal of waste material from higher floors and scaffolding. But when are construction/debris chutes required in BC?

Learn how to develop an effective safety program.

When Material or Equipment is Dropped More Than 6 Metres

Per section 20.10(1) of WorkSafeBC regulations, if any material or equipment is to be dropped more than 6 metres (20 feet), then a chute or another equally effective method should be used. This ensures that the debris safely lands without causing harm or inconvenience to those below.

It does not matter if the chute is sloped or straight. What matters is that it is effective in ensuring that materials do not bounce out, per section 20.10(2) of WorkSafeBC regulations. Using chutes that are designed with efficiency in mind will prevent unforeseen accidents.

In areas where the potential of fallen material poses a hazard, and a chute is not practical, a strong barricade must be set up per section 20.10(3). These barricades should be of robust construction, placed around the drop area, and signposted to warn of the danger.

Use Chutes for Hazardous Materials

If the debris being disposed of consists of materials hazardous to health, like silica or asbestos, it is crucial to use a chute that ensures the safe disposal of such materials. This protects not only the workers onsite but also the environment.

Training is Key

While the use of chutes is mandated by WorkSafeBC in specific scenarios, their effectiveness is determined by the people using them. Workers must be trained in the correct use and maintenance of construction/debris chutes. Since a blocked chute can be as hazardous as no chute at all, it is essential to inspect and clean debris chutes regularly, ensuring they function optimally at all times.

The safety regulations provided by WorkSafeBC are not just guidelines; they are a blueprint for ensuring the well-being of every individual on a construction site. Understanding and adhering to these regulations is not just a matter of compliance but a commitment to a safer, more efficient work environment.
