Tips of Safely Using Scaffolding

Some simple tips for safely using scaffolding in any type of work environment include:

1. Make Sure Workers Undergo the Proper Training

The first step in ensuring the scaffolding is being used safely is making sure that all workers who will be working on or near scaffolding undergo the proper safety training. Through undergoing safety training, workers will learn how the scaffolds are designed and operated, how to safely get on and off the scaffold, how to prevent falls, and how to respond to emergency situations.

2. Understand the Scaffold’s Load Capacity

As the scaffolding is being setup on the jobsite, it is important to make sure that you understand the scaffolding’s load capacity, as well as to consider all of the different types of load that the scaffolding will be under during both construction and setup. To properly maximize the safety of working on a scaffold, make sure that the scaffold is not overloaded with workers or equipment and that nothing is pushing up against the guardrails.

3. Utilize Guardrails

Another thing that should be taken into consideration when setting up scaffolding at a worksite is the use of guardrails. Guardrails should be used on at least the three sides of any scaffolding over 10 feet high that is facing away from the building; however, since the side facing can still pose a danger to workers, you should consider adding guardrails to all four sides of the scaffold.

4. Perform a Scaffolding Inspection

Since scaffolding needs to be properly maintained and inspected on a regular basis, it is important to have a scaffolding professional inspect the structure to ensure that it is functional and safe. This inspection should include making sure that all of the boards are still intact and that all of the scaffold components are in optimal working condition.

5. Make Sure Workers Use Personal Protective Equipment

One of the easiest ways to ensure that workers remain safe while working on scaffolding is to make sure that they wear the correct personal protective equipment at all times. Depending on the type of worksite, workers should always be wearing head protection, fall protection gear, and non-slip footwear. Wearing these types of personal protective equipment will help maximize a worker’s safety at all times.
